Overhead cranes can improve safety and efficiency in many applications but when operators misuse them they can also become a serious safety hazard. A side lifter crane is a road going truck or semi trailer able to hoist and transport iso standard containers. Side pulling is one of the most common and most dangerous mistakes made with overhead cranes. Not every lifting crane is heavy machinery or an expansive derrick crane.

Sometimes however operators attempt to make a side pull or use the hoist horizontally to lift an object that is not directly underneath it. One of the most dangerous ways to misuse an overhead crane is to side load the hoist. Side loading can quickly cause a routine lift to become dangerous to operators bystanders and equipment. The sidelifter loads and unloads containers via a pair of hydraulic powered cranes mounted at each end of the vehicle chassis the cranes are designed to lift containers from the ground from other vehicles including rolling stock from railway wagons and directly from stacks on docks or aboard container ships a standard sidelifter is also able to stack a container at a two containers height.

Overhead crane hoists are typically designed to lift objects vertically. Container lift is done with parallel crane like hoists which can lift a container from the ground or from a railway vehicle.
